Vetting
Vetting is a process of examination and
evaluation, generally referring to
performing a background check on someone
before offering him or her employment,
conferring an award, etc. In addition,
in intelligence gathering, assets are
vetted to determine their usefulness..
Why is vetting necessary?
Vetting is necessary to exclude from
public office
individuals who represent a threat to
the state
because they:
• Hold anti-constitutional views;
• Are affiliated with terrorist groups, organised
crime or political pressure groups; or
• Are vulnerable to pressure, extortion
or
corruption.
Furthermore, vetting helps to:
• Ensure the probity and honesty of
staff and
prevent fraud;
• Protect VIPs, sensitive sites and
classified
information; and
• Discourage inappropriate individuals
from
applying for security-related positions
in the first
place.
